Jermaine Dupri Finally Gets the Credit He Deserves as the GOAT!
On June 14, 2018, Atlanta artist, producer, and songwriter, Jermaine Dupri, was officially inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The celebration was held in New York City at the 49th annual induction and awards dinner.
It’s about time that Jermaine Dupri gets the recognition he deserves as being the one of the greatest songwriters of all time. Turn on any 90’s jams playlist, and you are guaranteed to come across unforgettable hits like “Jump”, “Lets Get Married”, “U Should’ve Known Better”, “My Boo”… yes, they were all written or produced by the legend himself!
Jermaine Dupri has produced and worked in collaboration with some of the greatest artists in the music industry. His most notable projects are working with musical legends like Kris Kross, Usher, Ludacris, Xscape, Mariah Carey, Alicia Keys, TLC, Bow Wow, Janet Jackson, Monica, and Da Brat.
Jermaine’s music career started at an early age, as a dancer for the 1980 hip hop group, Whodini, when he was only twelve years old. He then went on to make his first appearance in his first music video for the song “The “Freaks Come Out at Night.” Dupri’s dancing career gave him some major talent exposure and led him to perform all over the country for artists like RUN D.M.C and Grandmaster Flash.
At the beginning of his career, Dupri spent most of his time promoting the American hip-hop duo, Kris Kross, discovered in 1991. The group’s first album release was in 1992 called “Totally Krossed Out,” which went multi-platinum for their top singles “Warm it Up” and “Jump”. After much success, Dupri realize that he had a true eye for raw talent, so in 1993, Dupri established his own record label called “So So Def Recordings,” and shortly after, Dupri discovered the award winning female girl group, Xscape.
Jermaine Dupri’s songwriting career really took off in the 90s with the release of back to back hits. In 1995, Jermaine Dupri and Mariah Carey released the number one hit single, “Always Be My Baby,” followed by another major hit in 1997 when he co-wrote and produced several tracks on Usher’s second album, “My Way”. The single, “You Make me Wanna”, reached number one on the rhythmic Top 40 and Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart. In 2004 Dupri reunited with Usher again to work on his album Confessions, which sold over 10 million copies in the United States and over 20 million copies worldwide.
The highlight of Dupri’s career was in 2005 when he connected with Mariah Carey on her standout hit, “We Belong Together,” that won a grammy for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance and Best R&B song. The R&B song stayed number one for nearly fourteen weeks in a row, and set the record as the second longest running number one song in US chart history.
There is no doubt of the influence Jermaine Dupri has had on black music culture and decades later, the excitement of hearing his hits have yet to be played out. Congratulations Jermaine Dupri for another mark you’ve made on history!
