Carin Ford is a seasoned sound engineer whose career spans over three decades, defined by her work on Broadway and national theater productions. Her journey began with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech and Theater from St. Olaf College and she later sharpened her technical expertise at The Center for the Media Arts in New York City and in technical theater at The Juilliard School.
Ford’s career took off when she became the front-of-house (FOH) mix engineer for the national tour of The Search for Signs of Intelligent Life in the Universe, starring Lily Tomlin. This pivotal role opened doors to opportunities with major productions, including Mamma Mia, Beauty and the Beast, Les Misérables, and City of Angels.
Her impressive Broadway résumé includes celebrated productions such as Ragtime (original cast), Thoroughly Modern Millie, Caroline, or Change, The Color Purple (original cast), Young Frankenstein, La Cage Aux Folles (revival), Bring It On, Big Fish, Bullets Over Broadway, An American in Paris, Shuffle Along, Hello, Dolly! (starring Bette Midler), Carousel (revival), and Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf.
In addition to live sound engineering, Ford has also ventured into film sound editing. She served as the music editor for the 2021 filmed version of The Last Five Years, demonstrating her ability to transition seamlessly between mediums.
Commitment to Advocacy and Mentorship
In her ongoing efforts to create a more equitable theater industry, Ford co-founded Black Theatre United (BTU), an organization dedicated to fostering diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility. As co-chair of BTU’s Mentorship/Internship Committee, she has developed programs to open doors for Black talent in theater and create pathways for aspiring professionals.
Ford has also played a key role in BTU’s Designer Think Tank and the upcoming BTU Design Expo, initiatives aimed at increasing opportunities for artists of color across various design fields within theater.
